The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will launch a free and voluntary E-Verify Self-Check Service on March 21, 2011 in selected states that allows individuals to check their employment eligibility in the U.S. According to the USCIS E-Verify Self Check Interactive Preview, the E-Verify Self-Check service will be available to individuals currently maintaining residency in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, and Virginia, and it is expected that USCIS will expand the E-Verify Self-Check to other states and the service should eventually be available nationwide.

As explained in the USCIS E-Verify Self Check Interactive Preview, if any mismatches are found between the employment information individuals provide and their Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or Social Security Administration (SSA) records, the E-Verify Self Check service will inform them of how to correct those mismatches. Once individuals have confirmed their employment eligibility using E-Verify Self Check, they are unlikely to encounter difficulties when hired by an E-Verify participating employer. The availability of E-Verify Self Check will be limited for the initial launch as the service is tested and improved. The four steps to completing the E-Verify Self Check process are:

  • Enter ID Data: Users enter basic information such as name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number (SSN) into E-Verify website linked to USCIS and DHS sites.
  • Take Quiz: Identity assurance is performed by generating knowledge based questions using personal information provided by user.
  • Enter Document Data: Employment Eligibility verification is performed by gathering employment information and checking through E-Verify against DHS and SSA records.
  • Get Self Check Results: Users are notified of results – Work Authorization Confirmed, Possible Mismatch with SSA, or Possible Mismatch with Immigration Information – and, if necessary, receive guidance on how to correct any data mismatches with DHS or SSA.

To prevent fraud, users are only able to use E-Verify Self Check if their identity is successfully authenticated. In addition, employers are warned not to use the E-Verify Self-Check Service to pre-screen the employment eligibility of new hires or ask to see a Self-Check query to prove work authorization. Also, a positive Self-Check result does not guarantee that individuals will pass through E-Verify without issue at a later date.
