Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 244,000 jobs overall in April 2011 – with the private sector adding 268,000 jobs, the most in over five years since February 2006 – and the gains occurred mostly in several service-providing industries, the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has reported.
‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION – APRIL 2011’ report also showed the unemployment rate edged up from 8.8 percent to 9 percent in April while the number of unemployed persons changed little at 13.7 million. Since February 2010, total payroll employment has grown by 1.8 million jobs and private sector employment has increased by 2.1 million jobs.
The following industries all saw growth in the month of April 2011:
- Retail Trade: Employment rose by 57,000 jobs overall, with general merchandise stores adding 27,000 jobs, electronics and appliance stores adding 6,000 jobs, building material and garden supply stores adding 6,000 jobs, and automobile dealers adding 5,000 jobs.
- Professional and business services: Employment continued to expand with an increase of 51,000 jobs overall, with management and technical consulting services adding 11,000 jobs and in computer systems design and related services adding 8,000 jobs.
- Leisure and hospitality: Employment continued to increase with 46,000 jobs added, and this industry has added 151,000 jobs over the past three months, with nearly two-thirds of the growth in food services and drinking places.
- Health care: Employment increased by 37,000 jobs, with ambulatory health care adding 22,000 jobs and hospitals adding 10,000 jobs.
- Manufacturing: Employment rose by 29,000 jobs and this industry has added 250,000 jobs since December 2009, including 141,000 jobs in 2011. Machinery added 5,000 jobs, primary metals added 4,000 jobs, and computer and electronic products added 4,000 jobs.
- Mining: Employment rose by 11,000 jobs, with more than half of the gain occurring in support activities, and has increased by 107,000 jobs since October 2009.
Employment in both state government and local government continued to trend down, with losses concentrated in the non-educational components, while employment in construction, information, financial activities, and transportation and warehousing changed little in April 2011.
The Employment Situation report for May 2011 is scheduled to be released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, June 3, 2011.
