Employment in the private-sector increased by 38,000 jobs from April 2011 to May 2011 on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the most recent Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®) National Employment Report®. The ADP Report is derived from actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month.

“Although we continue to see jobs being added to the economy, this month’s job figures show that employers believe we are not out of the woods yet when it comes to decisions on hiring,” ADP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary C. Butler stated in the press release.

The May 2011 ADP National Employment Report, created by ADP in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, highlighted the following gains and losses in nonfarm private employment:

  • Total employment: +38,000 jobs
  • Small businesses (payrolls with 1-49 employees): +27,000 jobs
  • Medium businesses (payrolls with 50-499 employees): +30,000 jobs
  • Large businesses (payrolls with more than 499 employees): -19,000 jobs
  • Goods-producing sector: -10,000 jobs
  • Service-providing sector: +48,000 jobs

According to the report, employment in the service-providing sector rose by 48,000 jobs in May, marking 17 consecutive months of employment gains, while employment in the goods-producing sector fell 10,000 jobs following six months of increases. Also in May, manufacturing employment fell 9,000 jobs following seven consecutive monthly gains.
