The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) – the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States – has launched a Spanish language version of ‘Self Check,’ a free online service of E-Verify that allows workers to check their own employment eligibility status, according to a USCIS news release. Self Check has also expanded from its initial March 2011 launch to residents of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, Virginia, and the District of Columbia to now include 16 additional states: California, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

Self Check is the first online service offered directly to U.S. workers by E-Verify, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program administered by USCIS in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Employers use the Internet-based E-Verify service to determine eligibility of employees to work in the United States through information reported in the Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 of employees.

Workers using Self Check to confirm their work eligibility in the U.S. enter the same information into E-Verify that employers would enter, and can compare their information to the same databases E-Verify accesses, which gives them an opportunity to address any existing data mismatches before they are hired by an E-Verify-participating employer.

Currently, federal contractors and subcontractors in all states must use E-Verify and many U.S. states have additional mandates on the use of E-Verify by employers.
