With news that could put a damper on some Labor Day weekend celebrations, ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION – AUGUST 2011’ released by U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics today shows nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged, adding zero jobs, while the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent and the number of unemployed persons was essentially unchanged at 14.0 million in August. Adding to the gloom, the change in total nonfarm payroll employment for June 2011 was revised from +46,000 to +20,000 and the change for July 2011 was revised from +117,000 to +85,000. Employment in most major private sector industries changed little over the month as total nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged at 131.1 million in August 2011. Key findings in specific private sector employment included the following:

  • Health care employment rose by 30,000 jobs in August 2011 and has grown by 306,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Mining employment continued to trend up in August 2011, adding 6,000 jobs, and has risen by 144,000 jobs since reaching a low in October 2009.
  • Professional and business services, computer systems design, and related services added 8,000 jobs in August 2011.
  • Manufacturing employment lost 3,000 jobs in August 2011, but has added an average of 14,000 jobs per month for the past 4 months.
  • Information industry employment declined by 48,000 jobs in August 2011 since approximately 45,000 workers in the telecommunications industry were on strike and off company payrolls during the month.
  • Government employment continued to trend down in August 2011, losing 17,000 jobs over the month. Employment in state government gained 5,000 jobs in August 2011 while employment in local government continued to decline and has lost 550,000 jobs since employment peaked in September 2008.

Elsewhere in the private sector industries, employment in construction, transportation, financial activities, and leisure and hospitality changed little over the month of August 2011.
