While the practice of employers in most industries performing background checks on job applicants is common these days, just how prevalent employment background screening has become is evidenced by a story from KRGV ABC Channel 5 News in Rio Grande Valley, Texas in which an Edinburg, TX man was accused of conducting background checks for a drug trafficking organization by checking criminal history and driver’s license information for people being considered as drivers for drug traffickers.

KRGV Channel 5 reports that the 38-year-old former United States probation officer pleaded guilty to accepting bribes and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance and was sentenced to two 14-year prison sentence – which he will serve concurrently – followed by five years of supervised release.

According to KRGV, the man received $5,000 from a drug trafficking organization for confidential information regarding a person being considered as a driver for the drug trafficking organization.
