Private sector employment in the United States increased by 170,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012 on a seasonally adjusted basis led by the private service-providing sector adding 152,000 jobs and small businesses adding 95,000 jobs, according to the January 2012 ADP National Employment Report® from Automatic Data Processing, Inc. Highlights from the January 2012 Report – which marks the twenty-fourth consecutive monthly gain in private employment as measured in the ADP National Employment Report – include the following statistics:

  • Total U.S. nonfarm private employment rose by 170,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012.
  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 95,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 72,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with more than 499 employees added 3,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012.
  • Service-providing sector added 152,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012.
  • Goods-producing sector added 18,000 jobs from December 2011 to January 2012.
Of the 95,000 jobs created in private small business employment, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – found that 84,000 small business jobs were created in the service-providing sector while 11,000 small business jobs were created in the goods-producing sector. In addition, the estimated gain in employment from November 2011 to December 2011 was revised down to 292,000 jobs from the initially reported 325,000 jobs.
