According to the April 2012 ADP National Employment Report® from Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®), U.S. private sector employment increased by 119,000 jobs from March 2012 to April 2012, with the private service providing sector adding 123,000 jobs during the month. However, employment in the private goods producing sector declined by 4,000 jobs in April 2012. The April 2012 ADP National Employment Report, which marked the twenty-seventh consecutive monthly jobs gain, is available at: “This month’s modest increase of 119,000 jobs appears consistent with the first-quarter Gross Domestic Product growth of 2.2 percent,” stated Carlos Rodriguez, President and CEO of ADP, in a press release. “We hope future rates of job creation will be more aggressive and sustained.” Estimated gains from February 2012 to March 2012 in the previous ADP Report were revised downward, from the initial estimate of 209,000 jobs to 201,000 jobs. Other U.S. private employment highlights from the April 2012 ADP Report include:

  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 58,000 jobs from March 2012 to April 2012.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 57,000 jobs from March 2012 to April 2012.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with more than 499 employees added 4,000 jobs from March 2012 to April 2012.
Of the 58,000 jobs overall created in private small business employment in April 2012, the ADP Small Business Report® – a subset of the ADP National Employment Report – found that 59,000 small business jobs were created in the service providing sector while 1,000 small business jobs were lost in the goods producing sector. Created by ADP in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, the ADP National Employment Report is derived from actual payroll data from approximately 500,000 U.S. business clients and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month. The May 2012 ADP National Employment Report will be released May 31, 2012.
