The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) – the agency that enforces federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination – has released a draft of the EEOC Strategic Enforcement Plan (SEP) open for public comment until September 18, 2012. The draft of the SEP, which will integrate all components of the EEOC’s private, public, and federal sector enforcement, is available at http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/plan/sep_public_draft.cfm.
Comments from the public about the SEP must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. ET on September 18, 2012 at [email protected] or received by mail at Executive Officer, Office of the Executive Secretariat, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 131 M Street, NE, Washington, D.C. 20507. For general inquiries about the plan, email [email protected] or call 202-663-4070 or 202-663-4494.
According to a press release from the EEOC, the first requirement of the ‘EEOC Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2012 – 2016’ was to develop the SEP by the start of fiscal year 2013 – which will begin October 1, 2012 – that would establish the EEOC’s priorities for the coming years. The EEOC Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2012 – 2016 is available at: http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/plan/strategic_plan_12to16.cfm.
As previously reported on the ESR News blog, the EEOC held a public meeting on July 18, 2012 to hear views on its proposed SEP from academic, business, civil rights, and federal sector representatives, along with former EEOC leaders and current employees. More information about the July 18 meeting held by the EEOC is available at: http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/meetings/7-18-12/index.cfm.
The EEOC enforces Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Titles I and V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and Title II of the Genetic Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 to protect workers from employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information.
