Two employment reports released this week differed noticeably in calculating the number of jobs created in August 2012. ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — AUGUST 2012’ released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States rose by 96,000 jobs while the August 2012 ADP National Employment Report® from Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP®) released Thursday found employment in the U.S. nonfarm private business sector increased by 201,000 jobs. The BLS report is available at while the ADP report is available at: The August 2012 Employment Situation Report from the BLS reported the unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent and the number of unemployed persons dropped to 12.5 million. The report also revised the change in total nonfarm employment for June 2012 from 64,000 jobs added down to 45,000 jobs added and the change for July 2012 was revised from 163,000 jobs added down to 141,000 jobs added. Among specific industries, the report found employment rose in in food services and drinking places, in professional and technical services, and in health care in August 2012:

  • Food services and drinking places employment increased by 28,000 jobs in August 2012 and by 298,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Professional and technical services employment rose by 27,000 jobs in August 2012, with computer systems design and related services adding 11,000 jobs and management and technical consulting services adding 9,000 jobs.
  • Health care employment rose by 17,000 jobs in August 2012, with ambulatory health care services and hospitals adding 14,000 jobs and 6,000 jobs, respectively.
  • Finance and insurance employment added 11,000 jobs in August 2012.
  • Utilities employment increased by 9,000 jobs in August 2012, mostly reflecting the return of utility workers who were off payrolls in July due to a labor-management dispute.
  • Employment in other major industries, including mining and logging, construction, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, and government, showed little change in August 2012.
  • Manufacturing employment edged down in August 2012 with a loss of 15,000 jobs.

The August 2012 ADP National Employment Report® found private service-providing sector employment expanding by 185,000 jobs and private goods-producing sector employment adding 16,000 jobs from July 2012 to August 2012. In addition, the ADP report found the estimated gain from July 2012 was revised up slightly from 163,000 jobs to 173,000 jobs.  Other highlights from report include:

  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 86,000 jobs from July 2012 to August 2012.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with more than 499 employees added 16,000 jobs from July 2012 to August 2012.
