Many courts near the U.S. Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Massachusetts will be closed Monday, October 29, 2012 in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, a potential superstorm that could generate high winds, torrential rain, flash floods, snowstorms, and massive power outages that could affect more than 50 million people. More information about the so-called ‘Frankenstorm,’ which the National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts to make landfall in southern New Jersey or central Delaware early Monday night, is available from the NHC website at: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#SANDY.
The following states have reported court closures for Monday, October 29, 2012 and beyond:
- Connecticut: According to the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch website, all courts and administrative offices will be closed on Monday, October 29 due to the storm. The Office of the Probate Court Administrator is closed on Monday and many of the Probate Courts throughout the state are also closed.
- Delaware: The Delaware State Courts website reports that the Delaware Judiciary will be closed on Monday, October 29 due to inclement weather with the exception of Justice of the Peace Courts 3, 7, and 11.
- District of Columbia (D.C.): Federal Government offices are closed Monday, October 29 except for emergency employees, as is D.C. government. The D.C. Superior Court, Federal courts of appeals for the D.C., second and third circuits, Loudoun County courts, and Prince George’s County circuit and district courts are closed Monday, the Washington Post Reports.
- Maryland: Several Maryland courts will be closed in the coming days. For a list of courts that have reported closings or delays due to weather conditions on Monday, October 29, Tuesday, October 30, and Wednesday, October 31, visit the Judiciary Information Line of the Maryland Judiciary website.
- Massachusetts: All state trial courts in Massachusetts will close at 12:00 PM Noon Monday, October 29 and stay closed until 12:00 PM Noon Tuesday, October 30, and the Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court will be closed all day Monday, WBZ CBS Boston reports.
- New Jersey: The New Jersey Judiciary and all court buildings will be closed on Monday, October 29. Check the New Jersey Courts website for information on court operations for Tuesday, October 30.
- New York: New York state courts in New York City in all five boroughs and in the surrounding counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Orange, Dutchess, Westchester, and Putnam counties will be closed on Monday, October 29 except for arraignments and emergency applications, the New York Post reports.
- North Carolina: The Currituck County Courthouse will be closed Monday, October 29, due to Hurricane Sandy and will reopen Tuesday, October 30 pending no damage. The Dare County Courthouse will close Monday, October 29, due to Hurricane Sandy and reopen Tuesday, October 30, pending no damage. - Pennsylvania: All Courts and Offices of the First Judicial District of Philadelphia Courts will be closed on Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30 except for essential employees due to the storm, according to the Philadelphia Courts website. The Harrisburg filing offices for the Supreme, Superior, and Commonwealth Courts of Pennsylvania and the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts located in the Pennsylvania Judicial Center will be closed October 29 and October 30, according to the Judicial System of Pennsylvania website.
- Rhode Island: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee says non-essential state agencies, including state courts, will be closed Monday, October 29, 2012, NBC Channel 10 WJAR reports.
- Virginia: Several courts in the Virginia and D.C. area will be closed on Monday, October 29. For listing of Court closings and delays in the Virginia and D.C. area, visit the WUSA CBS Channel 9 website.
