Attorney Lester Rosen, a safe hiring expert and Founder and CEO of background check firm Employment Screening Resources (ESR), discussed ‘The Top Ten Trends for Background Checks in 2013 – What Every Employer Needs to Know’ during an interview by Stephanie R. Thomas, Ph. D., the host of The Proactive Employer, on February 7, 2013. Rosen – author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ a comprehensive guide to employment screening updated for a 2nd edition published in October 2012 – compiled the 6th annual ‘ESR Top 10 Background Check Trends for 2013’ featuring emerging and influential trends in the screening industry employers should look for in the coming year. The complete list of trends is available at https://www.esrcheck.com/Top-Ten-Background-Check-Trends-for-2013.php.
“Safe hiring means that you are looking to hire individuals who are qualified, that are truthful, that are safe, that have the credentials that they say they have in past employment and education, and that they will fit into the workforce,” Rosen explained when asked to give an overview of the topic of safe hiring. He also added that a safe hiring program is not just a background check but also includes the interview, job application forms, and contacting past employers.
During the hour long interview, Rosen discussed several trends including the new Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Guidance of the use of criminal records by employers, the dangers of using social media for screening, and the “ban the box” movement to remove the question about criminal records on job applications. He also talked about credit reports, international screening, “offshoring” data, “diploma mills,” and workplace violence.
When asked how employers can avoid bad hires and negligent hiring claims, Rosen’s bottom line advice is that they should audit current hiring programs. ESR has developed a 25-Question Safe Hiring Audit Test that covers a broad area of best practices and legal compliance to give employers a basic assessment and needs analysis of their basic processes. The ESR Safe Hiring Audit Test is available at https://www.esrcheck.com/articles/Safehiringaudit.php.
Rosen has compiled annual lists of top screening trends since 2008 after reviewing evolving hiring practices and demographics, legal cases for background checks, advancements in screening technology, government regulations for screening at the federal and state level, and questions and concerns regarding background checks.
