Total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States increased by 148,000 jobs in September 2013 while the unemployment rate edged down to 7.2 percent and the number of unemployed persons remained unchanged 11.3 million, according to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — SEPTEMBER 2013’ report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Delayed by the recent Federal government shutdown that ended October 17, 2013, the Employment Situation Report is usually released on the first Friday of each month at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf.
The September 2013 Employment Situation Report revised the change in total nonfarm payroll employment for July 2013 from 104,000 jobs added down to 89,000 jobs added while the change for August 2013 was revised from 169,000 jobs added up to 193,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in July 2013 and August 2013 combined were 9,000 jobs more than previously reported. Employment increased in professional and business services, transportation and warehousing, retail trade, construction, wholesale trade, and health care during September 2013. Over the past 12 months, employment growth has averaged 185,000 jobs per month. Among specific industries, the report found:
- Professional and business services employment continued to trend up with 32,000 jobs added in September 2013 and growth in this industry averaged 52,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months.
- Transportation and warehousing employment added 23,000 jobs in September 2013 with 18,000 jobs occurring in transit and ground passenger transportation.
- Retail trade employment added 20,000 jobs with 5,000 jobs added in building material and garden supply stores and 4,000 jobs added in automobile dealers.
- Construction employment rose by 20,000 jobs in September 2013, after showing little change over the prior six months.
- Wholesale trade employment rose by 16,000 jobs in September 2013 and this industry has added an average of 7,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months.
- Health care employment added 7,000 jobs in September 2013 and has added an average of 19,000 jobs per month so far in 2013 compared with an average monthly increase of 27,000 jobs in 2012.
Employment in other major industries including financial activities, leisure and hospitality , mining and logging, manufacturing, information, and government showed little change or a decline in jobs in September 2013. The Employment Situation for October 2013 is scheduled to be released on Friday, November 8, 2013. This release was originally scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2013, but was rescheduled because of the recent partial Federal government shutdown.
