Private sector employment in the United States increased by 238,000 jobs from November 2013 to December 2013 led by a gain of 108,000 jobs in small businesses, according to the December 2013 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. The December 2013 ADP National Employment Report includes a breakdown of job growth by company size (NOTE: Sum of components in the report may not equal total due to rounding):

  • Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 108,000 jobs.
  • Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 59,000 jobs.
  • Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 71,000 jobs.

The ADP report also provides a breakdown of job growth by sector in December 2013:

  • Service providing sector added 170,000 jobs.
  • Goods producing sector added 69,000 jobs.

In addition, the report takes a snapshot of job growth by industries in December 2013:

  • Professional/business services added 53,000 jobs.
  • Construction added 48,000 jobs.
  • Trade/transportation/utilities added 47,000 jobs.
  • Manufacturing added 19,000 jobs.
  • Financial activities added 10,000 jobs.

The ADP National Employment Report is a monthly measure of the change in total U.S. nonfarm private employment derived from actual, anonymous payroll data of nearly 24 million U.S. workers from client companies served by ADP.
