Private sector employment in the United States increased by 175,000 jobs from December 2013 to January 2014, according to the January 2014 ADP National Employment Report® produced by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. “The U.S. private sector added 175,000 jobs in January, which is in line with the average monthly growth throughout 2013,” ADP president and chief executive officer Carlos A. The January 2014 ADP National Employment Report includes a breakdown of job growth by company size (NOTE: Sum of components in the report may not equal total due to rounding):
- Small businesses representing payrolls with 1 to 49 employees added 75,000 jobs.
- Medium businesses representing payrolls with 50 to 499 employees added 66,000 jobs.
- Large businesses representing payrolls with 500 or more employees added 34,000 jobs.
The ADP report also provides a breakdown of job growth by sector in January 2014:
- Service providing sector added 160,000 jobs.
- Goods producing sector added 16,000 jobs.
In addition, the report takes a snapshot of job growth by industries in January 2014:
- Professional/business services added 49,000 jobs.
- Trade/transportation/utilities added 30,000 jobs.
- Construction added 25,000 jobs.
- Financial activities showed no change.
- Manufacturing lost 12,000 jobs.
The ADP National Employment Report is a monthly measure of the change in total U.S. nonfarm private employment derived from actual, anonymous payroll data of nearly 24 million U.S. workers from client companies served by ADP. The February 2014 ADP National Employment Report will be released on March 5, 2014.
