Jobs ReportTotal nonfarm employment in the United States increased by 288,000 jobs in April 2014 while the unemployment rate fell from 6.7 percent to 6.3 percent and the number of unemployed persons decreased from 10.5 million to 9.8 million, according to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — APRIL 2014’ jobs report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Over the year, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons declined by 1.2 percentage points and 1.9 million respectively. The jobs report for April 2014 found employment gains were widespread and led by job growth in professional and business services, retail trade, food services and drinking places, and construction. Job growth averaged 190,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months. Among specific industries, the jobs report found:

  • Professional and business services added 75,000 jobs in April 2014, and employment in this industry had increased by an average of 55,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months.
  • Retail trade employment rose by 35,000 jobs in April 2014, and employment in this industry has grown by 327,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Food services and drinking places employment added 33,000 jobs in April 2014, about in line with its prior 12-month average gain of 28,000 per month.
  • Construction employment added 32,000 jobs in April 2014. Construction has added 189,000 jobs over the past year, with almost three-fourths of the gain occurring in the past 6 months.
  • Health care employment rose by 19,000 jobs in April 2014, about in line with the prior 12-month average gain of 17,000 per month.
  • Mining employment added 10,000 jobs in April 2014.

Employment in other major industries including manufacturing, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and government, changed little over the month.

The jobs report for February 2014 was revised from 197,000 jobs added to 222,000 jobs added and the jobs report for March 2014 was revised from 192,000 jobs added to 203,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in February and March were 36,000 jobs higher than previously reported. The jobs report for May 2014 is scheduled to be released on Friday, June 6, 2014.
