On September 15, 2015, credit reporting agency Experian discovered a data breach where an unauthorized party accessed records containing personally identifiable information (PII) of T-Mobile users including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (SSNs), and additional information housed in an Experian server, according an FAQ page about the data breach on the Experian website.

The webpage “Overview: Unauthorized Acquisition of Personal Information” describes the data breach as an isolated incident over a limited period of time that accessed a server with PII of consumers who applied for T-Mobile USA postpaid services between September 1, 2013 and September 16, 2015. No payment card or banking information was obtained.

Experian notified appropriate federal and international law enforcement agencies and took additional security steps to help prevent future data breach incidents. Experian is also notifying the individuals who may have been affected by the data breach and is offering free credit monitoring and identity resolution services for two years. Government agencies are being notified as required by law. Experian’s consumer credit database was not accessed in this incident and no payment card or banking information was obtained.
