SBA

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) – an agency of the federal government that protects the interests of small business owners – will hold the National Small Business Week (NSBW) from May 1-7, 2016 with this year’s theme being “Dream Big, Start Small.” Links to information about the many events that are being held around the country during National Small Business Week are available below.

According to the SBA website: “Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.”

The U.S. Congress created the SBA in the Small Business Act of July 30, 1953 with the function to aid, counsel, assist, and protect the interests of small business concerns. The charter also stipulates that the SBA would ensure small businesses a “fair proportion” of government contracts and sales of surplus property. As reported earlier on the ESR News Blog, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) – the federal agency that enforces laws prohibiting employment discrimination – has issued a one-page fact sheet entitled “Preventing Discrimination is Good Business” to help small business owners understand their responsibilities under the federal employment anti-discrimination laws.

The fact sheet provides a brief and user-friendly overview of the legal obligations of small business owners under the anti-discrimination laws. To respond to the large number of small businesses across the country started by immigrants whose first language is not English, the fact sheet is available in 30 different languages at http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/publications/.
