BLS Jobs Report

The U.S. economy added 160,000 jobs in April while the unemployment rate remained virtually unchanged at 5.0 percent, according to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — APRIL 2016’ released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The April jobs report found that the number of unemployed persons decreased slightly to 7.9 million. Over the prior 12 months, employment growth had averaged 232,000 jobs per month. In April, employment gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, and financial activities.

  • Professional and business services employment added 65,000 jobs in April. The industry added an average of 51,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months.
  • Health care employment increased by 44,000 jobs in April. Over the year, health care employment has increased by 502,000 jobs.
  • Financial activities employment rose by 20,000 jobs in April and has added 160,000 jobs over the past 12 months.

On the negative side, mining employment lost 7,000 jobs in April. Employment in other major industries including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, leisure and hospitality, and government, showed little or no change over the month.

The change in employment for February was revised from 245,000 jobs added to 233,000 jobs added and the change for March was revised from 215,000 jobs added to 208,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment gains in February and March were 19,000 less than previously reported.

The ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION’ is released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on the first Friday of every month. The Employment Situation for May 2016 is scheduled to be released on June 3, 2016. Until that day, the current jobs report will be available online at
