Federal and state courts in the United States will be closed on Monday, May 30, 2016, in observance of Memorial Day, the federal holiday in the U.S. created for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces which is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Federal courts will be closed in observance of these remaining holidays in 2016:

  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 30, 2016
  • Independence Day – Monday, Jul 4, 2016
  • Labor Day – Monday, Sept 5, 2016
  • Columbus Day – Monday, Oct 10, 2016
  • Veterans Day – Friday, Nov 11, 2016
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, Nov 24, 2016
  • Day after Thanksgiving – Friday, Nov 25, 2016
  • Christmas Day Monday, Dec 26, 2016 *

* December 25, 2016, the legal public holiday for Christmas Day, falls on a Sunday.

According to online encyclopedia, Memorial Day originated as “Decoration Day” after the American Civil War as a time to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. “Memorial Day” became common after World War II. Congress passed a law that moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May in 1971.

ESR Offices Closed on Memorial Day

Employment Screening Resources (ESR) offices will be closed on Monday, May 30, 2016, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday that honors American service members who died in combat. ESR offices will reopen on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. ESR salutes our veterans, the men and woman currently in uniform, and their families for their service and sacrifice for America.
