Marcy Montellano, Director of Gaming Solutions for global background check firm Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), will present a workshop entitled “Social Media and Background Screening: Is it Right for Your Commission?” at the National Tribal Gaming Commissioners/Regulators (NTGCR) Fall 2016 Conference taking place at the Seneca Niagara Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, New York, from Tuesday, September 20, 2016, to Thursday, September 22, 2016. A brochure for the NTGCR Fall 2016 Conference describes Montellano’s presentation in the following way:

The use of social media continues to be a hot topic for employers. From sourcing to recruiting to screening, there are numerous ways companies are leveraging social media. “How can employers implement social media as part of their screening program?” is a question we hear a lot. This presentation will explore important topics that a Gaming Commission should consider before using social media as a screening tool. Social media is here to stay and creating a program that achieves company goals while observing best practices is critical for your program’s success.

Social media background checks are a fast growing trend. According to the CareerBuilder annual social media recruitment survey released in April of 2016, 60 percent of employers used social media to research job candidates in 2016, up from 52 percent in 2015, 22 percent in 2008, and 11 percent in 2006, a significant increase of 500 percent in the last decade. Montellano will show how social media content may cause employers to hire – or not to hire – job applicants. Other issues faced by employers when using social media to screen applicants include:

  • The TMI Problem with Social Media – Too Much Information?
  • Privacy in the Brave New Online World – Is Everything on the Web Fair Game?
  • What Is Real in Social Media? – Issues Concerning Identity and Authenticity.
