On April 5, 2017, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) held a public meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., where experts examined the current state of the workforce in the United States and what jobs may be in future demand, according to a press release from the EEOC.

“A thorough understanding of today’s workforce, the employment opportunities available, the challenges in the job market – all are critical to our work in the EEOC,” Acting EEOC Chair Victoria A. Lipnic stated in the press release. President Donald Trump appointed Lipnic Acting Chair of the EEOC in January 2017.

Experts told the EEOC – the agency enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination – that upgrading the skills of the U.S. workforce and creating employment opportunities for all workers was key to strengthening the nation’s job market. All of them discussed the benefits of apprenticeship programs as a driver of skills training.

Experts agreed that workers must acquire the skills needed for current and future jobs across many employment sectors, and policymakers should do more to support this need by expanding education and training programs, and by removing barriers to hiring for various segments of the population, including women and minorities.

“Job opportunities must not be denied to anyone for discriminatory reasons. And at the end of our work, discrimination must be remedied with employment opportunity,” Acting EEOC Chair Lipnic stated in the press release, which is available on the EEOC website at
