June Employment Situation Report Shows U.S. Economy Gained 222,000 Jobs

The United States economy added 222,000 jobs in June 2017 while the unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 4.4 percent, according to The Employment Situation report released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobs report revealed that the number of unemployed persons in the U.S. increased slightly to 7.0 million in June 2017. Employment rose in health care, professional and business services, food services and drinking places, social assistance, financial activities, and mining.

• Health care employment added 37,000 jobs in June and has added an average of 24,000 jobs per month in the first half of 2017.
• Professional and business services employment continued to trend up in June with 35,000 jobs added and has grown by 624,000 jobs over the last 12 months.
• Food services and drinking places employment also continued on an upward trend in June with 29,000 jobs added and has added 277,000 jobs over the year.
• Social assistance employment increased by 23,000 jobs in June and has added 115,000 jobs over the last 12 months.
• Financial activities employment rose by 17,000 jobs in June and has grown by 169,000 jobs over the year.
• Mining employment grew by 8,000 jobs in June mining and has added 56,000 jobs since a recent employment low in October 2016.

Employment in other major industries including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, and government, showed little change over the month, according to the report.

The change in employment for April 2017 was revised from 174,000 to 207,000 jobs added while May 2017 was revised from 138,000 to 152,000 jobs added. With the revisions, employment gains in these two months were 47,000 jobs more than previously reported.

The Employment Situation report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The Employment Situation for July 2017 is scheduled to be released on August 4, 2017. Until then, the latest Employment Situation report is available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
