Screening

Written By ESR News Blog Editor Thomas Ahearn

The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) – which represents the interests of over 900 member companies around the world that offer tenant, employment, and background screening – has announced that more than 100 background screening companies are now accredited through the Background Screening Agency Accreditation Program (BSAAP) that has become a widely recognized seal of achievement in the background screening industry.

To become accredited, Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) – the technical term for background screening firms – must pass a rigorous onsite audit of its policies and procedures conducted by an independent auditing firm. NAPBS accreditation lasts for five years, after which time CRAs must recomplete the process if they wish to remain accredited. Accredited CRAs have made a commitment to uphold and deliver the highest level of industry standards for six critical areas:

  • Consumer Protection
  • Legal Compliance
  • Client Education
  • Researcher and Data Product Standards
  • Verification Service Standards
  • General Business Practices

“Accreditation not only adds value to the member company’s service, but by ensuring that policies and procedures adhere to a strict set of standards, it gives consumers an extra layer of confidence that their screening partners are operating at the highest possible levels,” said NAPBS Executive Director Melissa Sorenson. “Members that go through the accreditation process are demonstrating a commitment to excellence, compliance and consumer protection.”

Founded in 2003 as a not-for-profit trade association, the NAPBS represents the interests of companies around the world that offer background screening. The NAPBS provides relevant programs and training aimed at empowering members to better serve clients and maintain standards of excellence in the background screening industry, and presents a unified voice in the development of national, state, and local regulations. A national survey sponsored by the NAPBS – Employers Universally Using Background Checks to Protect Employees, Customers and the Public – found that 96 percent of the employers surveyed stated that their organizations conducted one or more types of employment background screening. The NAPBS commissioned HR.com to conduct the survey of over 1,528 human resources professionals in all 50 states from November 2016 to February 2017.
