Every year, Employment Screening Resources (ESR) – a global background check firm – releases the highly anticipated “ESR Top Ten Background Check Trends” that will directly affect organizations who conduct background screening and ESR Vice President of Strategic Growth Dawn Standerwick lists some of them in the article “Inside Background Screening” published in the March-May 2018 issue of Workplace Violence Today.

In the article, Standerwick – who has 26 years of experience in background screening and drug testing – writes that “existing and ever-growing legislation along with an increase in background screening litigation underscores the importance of aligning with a screening firm that can and will take an active interest in the clients’ compliance requirements.” She then lists five specific background check trends:

  • Local “Ban the Box” laws will be challenged as less effective than statewide BTB laws.
  • Salary history questions by employers will be restricted as “Pay Equity” movement spreads.
  • Lawsuits involving the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) will not slow down.
  • The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect in May of 2018.
  • Millennials are driving technology changes in the hiring process.
