On October 14, 2018, public records expert Michael Sankey was honored as the first recipient of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) Lifetime Achievement Award. Sankey was part of the steering committee that in 2003 founded the NAPBS, a professional trade association for the background screening industry, and he was elected to the first Board of Directors in 2004.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor awarded by NAPBS and recognizes an individual’s contributions during their career to advance excellence in the screening profession. According to the NAPBS, criteria for the award recipients include having made outstanding and ongoing accomplishments to the screening profession and/or to the NAPBS over a lengthy period of time in their professional lives.

Sankey has more than 30 years of experience researching public record access policies and procedures. He has authored or edited over 150 comprehensive reference publications about access to county, state, and federal public record information. He is regarded as a leading industry expert in public records, criminal record access, state Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) record access policies.

Sankey was the founder and former chief executive officer (CEO) of BRB Publications, the nation’s premier publisher of reference sources and websites used for locating public records. BRB’s books, online subscriptions, and database products point the way to over 34,000 government agencies and post-secondary accredited schools, and 3,500 record vendors who maintain, search, or retrieve records.

BRB Publications is a past recipient of the Publisher of the Year award from Quality Books and is a past winner of a Product Achievement Award from the Information Industry Association. Facts on Demand Press, an imprint of BRB, specializes in business management, background investigations, Internet-related references, and research publications found in book stores.

Sankey was the publisher and a co-editor for all three editions of “The Safe Hiring Manual,” the first comprehensive guide to background checks for employment purposes published by Facts on Demand Press and written by Attorney Lester Rosen, the founder and CEO of Employment Screening Resources® (ESR), a leading global background check provider headquartered in the San Francisco, California area.

“Mike’s active participation and encouragement were essential to the publication of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’” noted Rosen, who also wrote ‘The Safe Hiring Audit’ – which was edited by Sankey and published by Facts on Demand Press – and was chair of the steering committee that founded the NAPBS. “Without his participation, it is hard to see how the book would have been published.”

Sankey was also co-founder and Director of the Public Record Retriever Network (PRRN), one of the largest trade associations representing professionals in the public record industry.  PRRN was the first group to adopt Industry Standards and a Code of Professional Conduct in the public record retrieval industry. In 1973, Sankey received a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University.
