The United States economy added 155,000 jobs in November 2018 while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.7 percent during the month, according to the jobs report for November 2018 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The jobs report for November 2018 showed the number of unemployed persons decreased to 6.0 million while job gains occurred in health care, professional and business services, manufacturing, transportation and warehousing, and retail trade. Here are the specific job gains during the month:

  • Health care employment rose by 32,000 jobs in November 2018 and has increased by 328,000 jobs over the year.
  • Professional and business services employment gained 32,000 jobs in November 2018 and has added 561,000 jobs over the year.
  • Manufacturing employment added 27,000 jobs in November 2018 but has risen by 288,000 jobs over the year.
  • Transportation and warehousing employment rose by 25,000 jobs in November 2018 and by 192,000 jobs over the year.
  • Retail trade employment added 18,000 jobs in November 2018.

Employment in other major industries including mining, construction, wholesale trade, information, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and government showed little change over the month, according to the November 2018 jobs report.

The change in employment for October 2018 was revised from 250,000 jobs added to 237,000 jobs added while September 2018 was revised from 118,000 jobs added to 119,000 jobs added. With these revisions, job gains have averaged 170,000 over the past 3 months.

The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for December 2018 is scheduled to be released on Friday, January 4, 2019. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
