The United States economy added 196,000 jobs in March 2019 while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.8 percent during the month, according to the jobs report for March 2019 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
March 2019 Jobs Report
The jobs report for March 2019 showed the number of unemployed persons also remained unchanged at 6.2 million, while job gains occurred in health care, professional and technical services, food services and drinking places, and construction. Here are the specific job gains during the month.
- Health care employment rose by 49,000 jobs in March 2019 and has added 398,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
- Professional and technical services employment gained 34,000 jobs in March 2019, and 311,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
- Food services and drinking places employment grew by 27,000 jobs in March 2019, in line with its averages monthly gain over the prior 12 months.
- Construction employment added 16,000 jobs in March 2019 and has increased by 246,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
On the negative side, manufacturing employment declined by 6,000 jobs in March 2019. Employment in other major industries including mining, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and government showed little change over the month.
The change in employment for January 2019 was revised from 311,000 jobs added to 332,000 jobs added while February 2019 was revised from 20,000 jobs added to 33,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in January 2019 and February 2019 combined were 14,000 more than previously reported.
The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for March 2019 is scheduled to be released on Friday, May 3, 2019. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
