The United States economy added 263,000 jobs in April 2019 while the unemployment rate declined to 3.6 percent during the month, according to the jobs report for April 2019 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The jobs report showed the number of unemployed persons decreased to 5.8 million in April 2019. Job gains occurred in professional and business services, construction, health care, social assistance, financial activities, and manufacturing. Here are the specific job gains during the month.

  • Professional and business services employment gained 76,000 jobs in April 2019 and has added 535,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Construction employment rose by 33,000 jobs in April 2019 and has increased by 256,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Health care employment grew by 27,000 jobs in April 2019 and has added 404,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Social assistance employment added 26,000 jobs in April 2019 with all of the gains in individual and family services.
  • Financial activities employment grew by 12,000 jobs in April 2019 and has added 110,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Manufacturing employment added 4,000 jobs in April 2019 and has gained an average of 22,000 jobs per month.

On the negative side, retail trade employment lost 12,000 jobs in April 2019. Employment in other industries including mining, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, leisure and hospitality, and government showed little change over the month.

The change in employment for February 2019 was revised from 33,000 jobs added to 56,000 jobs added while March 2019 was revised from 196,000 jobs added to 189,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in February 2019 and March 2019 combined were 16,000 more than previously reported.

The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for May 2019 is scheduled to be released on Friday, June 7, 2019. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at (PDF).
