The United States economy added 75,000 jobs in May 2019 while the unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent during the month, according to the jobs report for May 2019 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The jobs report for May 2019 showed the number of unemployed persons remained at 5.9 million, while job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, and construction. Here are the specific job gains during the month.

  • Professional and technical services employment gained 33,000 jobs in May 2019 and increased by 498,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Health care employment rose by 16,000 jobs in May 2019 and has added 391,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Construction employment added 4,000 jobs in May 2019 and has increased by 215,000 jobs over the past 12 months.

Employment in other industries including mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and government showed little change over the month.

The change in employment for March 2019 was revised from 189,000 jobs added to 153,000 jobs added while April 2019 was revised from 263,000 jobs added to 224,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in March 2019 and April 2019 combined were 75,000 more than previously reported.

The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for June 2019 is scheduled to be released on Friday, July 5, 2019. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
