The United States economy added 164,000 jobs in July 2019 while the unemployment was unchanged at 3.7 percent during the month, according to the jobs report for July 2019 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The July 2019 jobs report showed the number of unemployed persons was little changed at 6.1 million, while job gains occurred in professional and technical services, health care, social assistance, financial activities, and manufacturing. Here are the specific job gains during the month.

  • Professional and technical services employment added 31,000 jobs in July 2019, bringing the 12-month job gain to 300,000 jobs.
  • Health care employment rose by 30,000 jobs in July 2019 and has increased by 405,000 jobs over the year.
  • Social assistance added 20,000 jobs in July 2019 and has increased by 143,000 over the year.
  • Financial activities employment added 18,000 jobs in July 2019, with most of the gain occurring in insurance carriers.
  • Manufacturing employment grew by 16,000 jobs in July 2019 after showing little net change in recent months.

On the negative side, mining employment declined by 5,000 jobs in July 2019. Employment in other industries including mining construction, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, leisure and hospitality, and government showed little change over the month.

The change in employment for May 2019 was revised from 72,000 jobs added to 62,000 jobs added while June 2019 was revised from 224,000 jobs added to 193,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in May 2019 and June 2019 combined were 41,000 less than previously reported.

The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for August 2019 is scheduled to be released on Friday, September 6, 2019. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
