National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2019

Written By ESR News Blog Editor Thomas Ahearn

Held every October, the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and to ensure that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online.

The overarching theme of NCSAM 2019 – “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.” – emphasizes personal accountability with information technology (IT), stresses the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at home and in the workplace, and focuses on citizen privacy, consumer devices, and e-commerce security.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) – established in 2018 as a component under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – has partnered with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to increase cybersecurity awareness and responsible technology use through the NCSAM.

The NCSAM 2019 Toolkit is a comprehensive guide for organizations, regardless of size or industry, to promote the core theme of positive and lasting cybersecurity habits and includes talking points, sample social media posts, and engagement ideas that can be used to connect with audiences.

Cybersecurity is important for background checks since data breach concerns have increased the need for information security at background screening firms. This trend was chosen by global background check firm Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) as one of the “ESR Top Ten Background Check Trends” for 2019.

ESR is accredited by the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA) – formerly the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) – and undergoes annual SSAE 18 SOC 2® Type 2 audits to protect the privacy, security, and confidentiality of personal data used for background checks.

ESR also has certified adherence to the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield Frameworks for transferring personal data from the European Union (EU) and Switzerland (Swiss) and has incorporated fully compliant General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) technology.
