People living in the District of Columbia (D.C.) are more vulnerable to identity theft and fraud than people living in the rest of America, according to a study that identified states where identity theft and fraud are worse by comparing data from the 50 states and D.C. from personal finance website WalletHub.
In order to determine where American consumers are most vulnerable to identity theft and fraud, the study compared data across three key dimensions – Identity Theft, Fraud, and Policy – and evaluated them using 15 key metrics graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most vulnerable.
The study found the states with the most identity theft and fraud were the District of Columbia (70.30), California (67.72), Nevada (65.41), New Hampshire (63.82), South Carolina (63.43), Delaware (63.26), Louisiana (62.45), Texas (62.43), New York (62.12), and Florida (61.57). The state with the least amount was Kentucky (31.86).
Tips for avoiding identity theft and fraud included emphasizing email security, signing up for credit monitoring, leveraging account alerts, updating contact information, and using common sense online such as not opening unfamiliar emails.
