Total nonfarm employment in the United States rose by 273,000 jobs in February 2020, while the unemployment rate dropped slightly to 3.5 percent during the month, according to the jobs report for February 2020 released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The jobs report showed the number of unemployed persons also dropped slightly to 5.8 million. Job gains occurred in health care, food services and drinking places, government, construction, professional and technical services, and financial activities during February 2020.

  • Health care employment increased by 57,000 jobs in February 2020 and has added 368,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Food services and drinking places employment grew by 53,000 jobs in February 2020 and has increased by 252,000 jobs over the past seven months.
  • Government employment increased by 45,000 jobs in February 2020, aided by the hiring of 7,000 temporary workers for the 2020 Census.
  • Construction employment added 42,000 jobs in February 2020 after having averaged 13,000 jobs per month in 2019.
  • Professional and technical services employment gained 32,000 jobs in February 2020 and has added 285,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
  • Financial activities employment added 26,000 jobs in February 2020 and has increased by 160,000 jobs over the past 12 months.

Employment in other industries including mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and government showed little change over the month, according to the jobs report for February 2020.

The change in employment for December 2019 was revised from 147,000 jobs added to 184,000 jobs added while January 2020 was revised from 225,000 jobs added to 273,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in December and January combined were 85,000 jobs higher than previously reported.

The monthly jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for March 2020 is scheduled to be released on Friday, April 3, 2020. Until then, the most recent jobs report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm (PDF).
