Team Rubicon Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Written By ESR News Blog Editor Thomas Ahearn

Team Rubicon, “a non-profit that has helped veterans respond to more than 500 humanitarian disasters during the past decade,” is engaging former service members to help reduce the risk of exposure to vulnerable communities that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is posing to the United States, CNN reported.

Team Rubicon co-founder Jake Wood – a former Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan – has asked all of the more than 120,000 registered volunteers on his roster to join the group’s nationwide “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” campaign to keep vulnerable at-risk populations safe and contain the spread of COVID-19.

“These are men and women who have volunteered to serve in harm’s way before. They’ve been deployed in some of the most austere and trying circumstances on the planet. They may have taken the uniform off, but they still have service in their hearts and still have those incredible skills,” Wood explained to CNN.

The story is part of a series about CNN Heroes. “During the pandemic alone, Team Rubicon says its volunteers have so far helped more than half a million people in more than 500 communities around the country. Now, Wood is asking all Americans – regardless of whether they’ve served in the military – to join his effort,” CNN reported.

“We are hoping Neighbors Helping Neighbors can become a nationwide call to action… This is a moment for all Americans to rise to the occasion by thinking about the greater good,” Wood told CNN, who also featured him in a 2012 story about the founding of Team Rubicon after a devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Team Rubicon launched the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” initiative (#NeighborsHelpingNeighbors) “to meet the needs of our communities through safe individual acts of service.” To learn more, visit https://teamrubiconusa.org/neighbors/.
