Just in time for Christmas, global background check firm Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) investigated what information might appear on a background check of Santa Claus. Here is what ESR discovered about his appearance, criminal history, alias names, work/address/driving history, personal life, and eyewitness accounts.
- Appearance: Santa Claus has been described as a “fat and jolly” man with a thick white beard who is usually dressed in a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, red trousers with white fur cuffs, a red hat with white fur, and a black leather belt with black boots. He also carries a heavy bag full of gifts.
- Criminal History: Santa Claus secretly enters homes around the world – usually through a chimney – late on Christmas Eve (December 24) or early on Christmas Day (December 25). He does not steal anything but leaves gifts for the sleeping inhabitants. The only items he takes are milk and cookies if they are left out for him.
- Alias Names: Santa Claus is known by several alias names or AKAs (“Also Known As”) that include “Saint Nicholas,” “Sinterklaas,” “Father Christmas,” and “Kris Kringle.” He is also called “Père Noël” in France and “Papá Noel” where the Spanish language is spoken. Sometimes he just uses his first name of “Santa.”
- Work History: Santa Claus is a self-employed “Christmas Gift Bringer.” He makes lists of all the children in the world and categorizes their behavior as either “naughty” or “nice.” He delivers presents to the “nice” children and coal to the “naughty” children. But no child receives coal since all children are nice.
- Address History: Santa Claus resides at the North Pole. His business address is at “Santa’s Workshop” where he manufactures the toys he gives to children at Christmas. His workforce is made up of “Santa’s Little Helpers” who are diminutive elves dressed in green and red with pointy ears and wearing pointy hats.
- Driving History: Santa Claus uses flying reindeer to pull his sleigh through the night sky to deliver gifts at Christmas (Track Santa’s flight around the world with the NORAD Santa Tracker). Santa’s reindeer include Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner (or Donder), Blitzen, and – on foggy Christmas Eves – Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
- Personal Life: Santa Claus lives with his wife, Mrs. Claus, who makes cookies with elves, cares for the reindeer, and prepares toys with her husband. Santa spends his time reading letters written to him by the children of the world and making all of the toys on their wish lists. He expresses his mirth with a deep-throated bellow: “Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!”
- Eyewitness Account: Santa Claus is described in a famous poem called “A Visit from St. Nicholas” that was published in 1823. In the poem, a father wakes to noises outside his home on Christmas Eve and sees St. Nick land his sleigh on the roof, enter by the chimney, leave toys for his children in stockings, and say: “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
