Total nonfarm employment in the United States rose by only 194,000 jobs in September 2021 – a disappointing figure since job growth had averaged 561,000 jobs per month so far this year – while the unemployment rate declined to 4.8 percent, according to the monthly jobs report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The number of unemployed persons was 7.7 million in September 2021, down considerably from April 2020 but higher than before the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in February 2020. Notable job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality, in professional and business services, in retail trade, and in transportation and warehousing.

  • Leisure and hospitality employment increased by 74,000 jobs in September 2021 but is down by 1.6 million jobs since February 2020.
  • Professional and business services employment added 60,000 jobs in September 2021 but is 385,000 jobs below its level in February 2020.
  • Retail trade employment rose by 56,000 jobs in September 2021 but is down by 202,000 jobs since February 2020.
  • Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 47,000 jobs in September 2021 and is 72,000 jobs above its level in February 2020.
  • Information employment increased by 32,000 jobs over in September 2021 but is down by 108,000 jobs since February 2020.
  • Social assistance employment added 30,000 jobs in September 2021 but is 204,000 jobs lower than in February 2020.
  • Manufacturing employment rose by 26,000 jobs in September 2021 but is 353,000 jobs lower than in February 2020.
  • Wholesale trade employment increased by 17,000 jobs in September 2021 but is down by 159,000 jobs since February 2020.
  • Mining employment added 5,000 jobs in September 2021 but is down by 93,000 jobs since a peak in January 2019.
  • Local government education decreased by 144,000 jobs, state government education decreased by 17,000 jobs, and private education decreased by 19,000 jobs. Since February 2020, employment is down by 310,000 jobs in local government education, by 194,000 jobs in state government education, and by 172,000 jobs in private education.
  • Health care employment lost 18,000 jobs in September 2021 and is down by 524,000 jobs since February 2020.
  • Employment showed little change in financial activities and in other services in September 2021.

The jobs report showed the change in employment for July 2021 was revised from 1,053,000 jobs added to 1,091,000 jobs added, while August 2021 was revised from 235,000 jobs added to 366,000 jobs added. With these revisions, gains in July 2021 and August 2021 were 169,000 jobs higher than previously reported.
