The “Great Resignation” continued as a record 4.4 million U.S. workers quit their jobs in September 2021, breaking the previous record of 4.3 million in August 2021 and recording the highest total since December 2000, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Quits” are voluntary separations initiated by the employee while the “Quits Rate” measures the willingness or ability of workers to leave their jobs. The “Quits Rate” rose to a series high of 3.0 percent in September 2021 with the largest increases of “Quits” in arts, entertainment, recreation, other services, and government education.

A survey of American workers by a job seeker resource released in September 2021 revealed that the “Great Resignation” that has caused a high number of voluntary “Quits” in 2021 is not over as 1 in 7 workers surveyed – approximately 15 percent of the workforce – indicated they planned to quit their jobs before the start of 2022.

The survey found 50 percent of respondents said better pay and benefits were the primary motivator to quit jobs. Other top reasons why people were seeking new job opportunities were starting their own business (44 percent), looking for remote work (43 percent), and finding a job about which they are more passionate (41 percent).
