Employment Screening Resources (ESR) – a service offering of ClearStar, a leading provider of Human Capital Integrity℠ technology-based services – is taking time to reflect on the company’s accomplishments in 2021. Here are some of those accomplishments, from the most recent in 2021 back to the start of this challenging year.

ESR Acquired by ClearStar

On December 1, 2021, ClearStar announced the acquisition of ESR as part of an ongoing growth strategy of acquiring and integrating best-in-class capabilities to deliver high-quality, cutting-edge services for customers. With ESR based on the West Coast, this acquisition strengthens ClearStar’s ability to operate coast-to-coast.

ESR Named to HRO Today’s Baker’s Dozen List

In November of 2021, ESR was named to the “2021 HRO Today’s Baker’s Dozen Customer Satisfaction Ratings for Pre-Employment Screening Leaders” list based on nearly 1,200 survey responses based solely on feedback from buyers of the rated services in an announcement by premier Human Resources (HR) network HRO Today.

“HRO Today has once again screened the screeners to find out which are the best,” said Elliot Clark, CEO and Chairman of HRO Today Magazine and SharedXpertise Media, who made the announcement on YouTube. “This is by far the largest and most prestigious survey in pre-employment screening services,” Clark added.

“We are very grateful to our clients for expressing their feedback for HRO Today’s Baker’s Dozen list – their voice matters greatly to ESR and there is no higher praise. We are also proud of our dedicated employees who provide our customers with an outstanding level of service every day,” said ESR founder and CEO Lester Rosen.

ESR Completes SOC 2 Type 2 Audit

Independent auditors conducting a Service Organization Control 2 (SOC 2®) Type 2 Audit of ESR’s operations for a six-month testing period during 2021 issued a report that stated ESR management has maintained effective controls over the privacy, security, and confidentiality of its employee background screening system.

The annual audit ensures ESR meets standards set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to protect customer and third-party information. NDNB Accountants & Consultants LLP, a nationally recognized Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm, performed the audit and issued the report.

“We are pleased that our annual SOC 2 Type 2 report once again shows ESR has appropriate controls in place to secure and protect our systems and databases,” said ESR President and Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) Brad Landin. ESR has successfully completed SOC 2 audits in 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, and 2014.

ESR Completes Privacy Shield Certification

A global background check provider with capabilities in more than 240 countries and territories – ESR received notification from the International Trade Administration (ITA) that ESR’s annual submission for certification of adherence to the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield frameworks was effective as of September 8, 2021.

The EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield frameworks provide companies on both sides of the Atlantic with a mechanism to comply with data protection requirements when transferring personal data from the European Union (EU) and Switzerland (Swiss) to the United States (U.S.). The Privacy Shield was launched on August 1, 2016.

“ESR is proud to certify that we continue to comply with the standards of Privacy Shield as well as more aggressive privacy laws such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation,” said ESR President and CCO Brad Landin. ESR was one of the first adopters of the Privacy Shield on August 12, 2016.

ESR Releases Top Ten Background Check Trends

In January of 2021, ESR released its 14th annual “ESR Top Ten Background Check Trends” for 2021 that featured emerging and influential trends in the background screening industry for the coming year. The complete list is available on the ESR website at www.esrcheck.com/Tools-Resources/ESR-Top-Ten-Background-Check-Trends/.

Since 2008, ESR has selected the background check trends that have substantially impacted the future of the background screening industry. For the top trends of 2021, how employers would continue to adjust their background screening processes during the COVID-19 pandemic topped the list as the number one trend.

ESR founder and CEO Lester Rosen helped to select the top background check trends. He was on the steering committee that founded the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA), a non-profit trade group representing the background screening industry. In 2019, Rosen received the PBSA Lifetime Achievement Award.
