The “Great Resignation” in the United States continued as a record high 4.5 million workers quit their jobs in November 2021, surpassing the former series high of 4.4 million workers who quit in September 2021, according to the monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The JOLTS defines “Quits” as voluntary separations initiated by the employee during an entire month, while the “Quits Rate” is the number of quits during an entire month as a percent of total employment. The “Quits Rate” increased to 3.0 percent in November 2021, matching the series high of 3.0 percent in September 2021.

“Quits” increased in several industries with the largest increases in accommodation and food services (+159,000); health care and social assistance (+52,000); and transportation, warehousing, and utilities (+33,000), according to the JOLTS for November 2021. The number of quits increased in the Northeast, South, and Midwest regions.

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) estimates for December 2021 are scheduled to be released on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
