2022Jobs Report

The United States economy added 431,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 3.6 percent in March 2022, according to the monthly jobs report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Notable job gains continued in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail trade, and manufacturing.

The jobs report showed the number of unemployed persons decreased to 6.0 million in March 2022. In February 2020, prior to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent and unemployed persons numbered 5.7 million. The report found job changes in the following industries during March 2022:

  • Leisure and hospitality employment increased by 112,000 jobs but is down by 1.5 million jobs since February 2020.
  • Professional and business services employment added 102,000 jobs and is 723,000 jobs higher than its level in February 2020.
  • Retail trade employment rose by 49,000 jobs and is 278,000 jobs above its level in February 2020.
  • Manufacturing employment added 38,000 jobs but is down by 128,000 jobs since February 2020.
  • Social assistance employment increased by 25,000 jobs but is down by 126,000 jobs since February 2020.
  • Construction employment added 19,000 jobs and has returned to its February 2020 level.
  • Financial activities employment rose by 16,000 jobs and is 41,000 jobs above its level in February 2020.
  • Health care employment added 8,000 jobs but is down by 298,000 jobs from its level in February 2020.
  • Transportation and warehousing employment lost 1,000 jobs but is 608,000 jobs higher than its February 2020 level.
  • Employment showed little change during the month in mining, wholesale trade, information, other services, and government in March 2022.

The change in total employment for January 2022 was revised from 481,000 jobs added to 504,000 jobs added while February 2022 was revised from 678,000 jobs added to 750,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment in January 2022 and February 2022 combined is 95,000 jobs higher than previously reported.
