Employers and recruiters have discovered a treasure trove of information on potential job applicants by using social media background checks. While employers and recruiters may seek to use the information to find the right candidate, the unrestricted use of this information as part of the hiring process is not without risks.
To help employers and recruiters, Attorney Lester Rosen – the founder of Employment Screening Resources (ESR), a service offering of ClearStar – will host a live webinar about “The Use of Social Media in Background Checks and Applicant Selection” from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM PDT on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
In this webinar presented by Clear Law Institute, attendees will navigate through legal and practical pitfalls when using social media and search engines to source and screen applicants. They will also examine the pros and cons of utilizing online data, including discrimination, privacy, and accuracy issues. Attendees will be able to:
- Utilize search engines and social network sites to screen candidates
- Review what sites are available and what you may find
- Identify the risks in using these sites
- Implement workplace policies based on discrimination laws and rules concerning off-duty conduct
- Avoid fraudulent degrees and fake employment from online services
- Evaluate the role of privacy in the use of social media
Just because something is online does not mean it can legally be used. Although there is potentially useful information online, many employers and recruiters do realize the potential risks associated with using social media and search engines to recruit and screen applicants.
