The United States economy added 528,000 jobs and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent in July 2022, according to the jobs report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Job growth was widespread, led by gains in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and health care.

The number of unemployed persons edged down to 5.7 million in July 2022 and both the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons have returned to their level in February 2020 prior to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The jobs report tracked changes in employment in all major industries.

  • Leisure and hospitality added 96,000 jobs in July 2022 (-1.2 million jobs since February 2020).
  • Professional and business services added 89,000 jobs in July 2022 (+986,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Health care added 70,000 jobs in July 2022 (-78,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Government added 57,000 jobs in July 2022 (-597,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Construction added 32,000 jobs in July 2022 (+82,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Manufacturing added 30,000 jobs in July 2022 (+41,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Social assistance added 27,000 jobs in July 2022 (-53,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Retail added 22,000 jobs in July 2022 (+208,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Transportation and warehousing added 21,000 jobs in July 2022 (+745,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Information added 13,000 jobs in July 2022 (+117,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Financial added 13,000 jobs in July 2022 (+95,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Mining added 7,000 jobs in July 2022 (+96,000 jobs since a recent low in February 2021).
  • Wholesale trade and other services changed little in July 2022.

The change in total employment for May 2022 was revised from 384,000 jobs added to 386,000 jobs added while June 2022 was revised from 372,000 jobs added to 398,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment in May 2022 and June 2022 combined is 28,000 jobs lower than previously reported.
