The United States economy added 315,000 jobs and the unemployment rate rose to 3.7 percent in August 2022, according to “The Employment Situation” report released each month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Notable job gains occurred in professional and business services, health care, and retail trade.

The number of unemployed persons rose to 6.0 million in August 2022 and both the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons have returned to their levels in February 2020 prior to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The jobs report tracked changes in employment in all major industries.

  • Professional and business services added 68,000 jobs in August 2022 (+1.1 million jobs over the year).
  • Health care added 48,000 jobs in August 2022 (-37,000 jobs since February 2020).
  • Retail trade added 44,000 jobs in August 2022 (+422,000 jobs over the year).
  • Leisure and hospitality added 31,000 jobs in August 2022 (-1.2 million jobs since February 2020).
  • Manufacturing added 22,000 jobs in August 2022 (+461,000 jobs added over the year).
  • Financial activities added 17,000 jobs in August 2022 (+200,000 jobs over the year).
  • Wholesale trade added 15,000 jobs in August 2022 (+197,000 jobs over the year).
  • Mining added 6,000 jobs in August 2022 (+68,000 jobs over the year).
  • Employment in other major industries such as construction, transportation and warehousing, information, other services, and government changed little in August 2022.

The change in total employment for June 2022 was revised from 398,000 jobs added to 293,000 jobs added while July 2022 was revised from 528,000 jobs added to 526,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment in June 2022 and July 2022 combined is 107,000 jobs lower than previously reported.

“The Employment Situation” is usually released on the first Friday of every month. “The Employment Situation” for September 2022 will be released on Friday, October 7, 2022, at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm.
