The United States economy added 261,000 jobs and the unemployment rate rose to 3.7 percent in October 2022, according to the jobs report released each month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Notable job gains occurred in health care, professional and technical services, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing.
- Health care added 53,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Professional and technical services added 43,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Leisure and hospitality added 35,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Manufacturing added 32,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Social assistance added 19,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Wholesale trade added 15,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Transportation and warehousing added 8,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Financial activities added 3,000 jobs in October 2022.
- Mining, construction, retail trade, information, other services, and government showed little change.
The change in total employment for August 2022 was revised from 315,000 jobs added to 292,000 jobs added while September 2022 was revised from 263,000 jobs added to 315,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment in August 2022 and September 2022 combined was 29,000 jobs higher than previously reported.
The jobs report is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for November 2022 is scheduled to be released on Friday, December 2, 2022, at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm. A PDF version of the report will be available at www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf.
