The United States economy added 236,000 jobs and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent in March 2023, according to “The Employment Situation” jobs report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment grew in leisure and hospitality, government, professional and business services, and health care.
- Leisure and hospitality added 72,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Government added 47,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Professional and business services added 39,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Health care added 34,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Social assistance added 17,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Transportation and warehousing added 10,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Retail trade lost 15,000 jobs in March 2023.
- Mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, information, financial activities, and other services did not change.
The change in total employment for January 2023 was revised from 504,000 jobs added to 472,000 jobs added while February 2023 was revised from 311,000 jobs added to 326,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment in January 2023 and February 2023 was 17,000 jobs lower than previously reported.
“The Employment Situation” is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for April 2023 is scheduled to be released on Friday, May 5, 2023.
