The United States economy added 339,000 jobs and the unemployment rate rose to 3.7 percent in May 2023, according to “The Employment Situation” report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most job gains occurred in professional and business services, government, health care, and leisure and hospitality.
- Professional and business services added 64,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Government added 56,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Health care added 52,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Leisure and hospitality added 48,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Construction activities added 25,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Transportation and warehousing added 24,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Social assistance added 22,000 jobs in May 2023.
- Mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, information, financial activities, and other services showed little change in May 2023.
The change in total employment for March 2023 was revised from 165,000 jobs added to 217,000 jobs added while April 2023 was revised from 253,000 jobs added to 294,000 jobs added. With these revisions, employment in March 2023 and April 2023 was 93,000 jobs higher than previously reported.
“The Employment Situation” is usually released on the first Friday of every month. The jobs report for June 2023 is scheduled to be released on Friday, July 7, 2023.
