Data Privacy Day – which is observed annually on January 28 – “is a global effort that generates awareness about the importance of privacy, highlights easy ways to protect personal information, and reminds organizations that privacy is good for business,” according to the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).

Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection, on January 28, 1981.

On January 27, 2014, the U.S. Congress adopted S. Res. 337, a non-binding resolution expressing support for the designation of January 28 as “National Data Privacy Day.” The NCSA leads the campaign to educate consumers on how they can own their online presence and show organizations how privacy is good for business.

In 2021, the NCSA is encouraging individuals to “Own Your Privacy” by learning more about how to protect valuable data online, and encouraging businesses to “Respect Privacy” by keeping personal information safe from unauthorized access and ensuring fair, relevant, and legitimate data collection and processing.

Millions of people are unaware of and uninformed about how their personal information is being used, collected, or shared. Data Privacy Day aims to inspire dialogue and empower individuals and companies to take action.
