Police Report Details Alleged Falsified Background Checks on School Employees

An internal school investigation attached to a New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) incident report details allegations that officials at a New Orleans public charter school possibly “fabricated criminal background checks for school employees,” according to a report from WWL-TV CBS Channel 4 in New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA).

The NOPD report obtained by WWL-TV suggested that the charter school’s chief financial officer (CFO) who recently resigned “may have played a role in fabricating the background checks, including her own background check from 2005 that indicated she didn’t have a rap sheet when she actually did,” WWL-TV reported.

“Emails attached to the NOPD report show that NOLA Public Schools requested background checks for school employees after a school district official discovered one new school employee had a criminal offense involving a minor on his record that should have prevented him from being hired,” WWL-TV reported.

Five of the background checks on employees hired more than five years ago provided by the former CFO used duplicate audit file numbers, and new background checks requested from the Louisiana State Police showed rap sheets for five employees whose old background checks showed no arrest records, WWL-TV reported.

The former CFO provided her own background check from 2005, which showed she had no rap sheet, but new background checks showed she was arrested in 1996 for bank fraud, bank larceny, and embezzlement, and arrested for larceny in 1999, and ended up pleading guilty to robbery from a bank, WWL-TV reported.
